For quite some years now, I have had a goal of reading sixty books a year, which averages, you know to five books a month. As you would expect there are years that I read a bit more, a bit less, just right. However, this year, January will come and go without my having read nary a one. The flabbergasting thing is that I cannot put my finger on any particular reason why, other than perhaps a general sense of ennui, a word I absolutely love.
A new month has dawned GF. Give Greensleaves a whirl on that underworked flute, get a 9:00 tee time for those Titleists in need of a babycakes fade over the dogleg, and crack open Clive James ‘Latest Readings’ who at the end of a long literary reign and terminally ill says he’ll read til the lights go out.

I absolutely love your advice, and I absolutely will take it, from music, to reading, to golf. Keeping on the golf theme, I am going to look at January as a mulligan. Lord knows, I have taken plenty of those in my day…
Cheers!

I hear you. The same here. In January I just got back in the habit of reading before bed. So,….i now take my current book and a cordial of Bourbon to bed. I’m taking advantage of this cocoon stage for winter don’t you know.

My Dear Mistress
Now I know why my unread books keep piling up, no bourbon, no bed. There seems to be only one way to get it all right, more bourbon, more bed, it also helps that dreary January has given way to dreary February, which brings us all one step closer to spring break March.
To Bourbon!
To Bed!

Ennui is a most excellent word. I can’t ski because of El Nino so there is little to do here but read.

Apparently, my ennui extends to prompt responses to wonderful notes left on my blog! First, thanks so for taking the time to read and comment. Now, to the matter at hand, yep, El Nino is a frisky little devil, problems here, joys there. For us, though his effects make for cooler weather, we are getting much needed, and I do mean, much needed rain, and though you’re not getting the snow, think of all those glorious books you get to plow through, including, I hope, Granny’s Wonderful Chair…
