As in, flat on my back, as in back pain, as in immobile, as in how the heck does this happen when making a bed, for God’s sake…
Oh well, at least I have an iPhone and a good book, or two, or three.
Hate to hear this GF, if immobilized I do hope the pain isn’t constant and that a full recovery is near at hand. If movements such as page turning cause pain I would encourage you to do an audio book and many are free online via youtube or go to audible.com and if you’re a new member the 1st one is free. I have nearly 300 audible.com selections in my library and you can test drive the reader prior to purchase.
I hope a night’s rest might reset that spinal column into proper alignment.

Thanks so much for your kind thoughts, words, and suggestions. I must admit to taking a bit of artistic license in my writing. Oh, the pain was real, the pain was constant, the pain was immobilizing, and the pain lasted days on end. It is just that now, except for a minor twinge here and there; the pain is no more. The whole mess happened in Virginia at my mother in law’s farm while taking my youngest to his new boarding school. There is nothing quite like exposing a weakness to Mother Dearest; and the whole damn event changed the post Woodberry plans of Mr. and Mrs. GF. Oh well, what can a poor boy do…

Oh dear, poor you.
Back pain is so debilitating and the world does indeed look to be a completely different place when viewed from a permanently horizontal position. Thank goodness for the technology to keep you connected with the outside world and to draw in sympathy from fellow bloggers. Family cannot always be relied upon in this respect,often finding amusement or simple revenge in one’s incapacity to fight back.
However, we are relieved to note from the reply to darling G that you are now on the mend. To have one’s mother at hand in these painful circumstances must have been a godsend. We are sure that she will have administered tea and sympathy or indeed chicken soup and empathy at regular intervals. Mum, on these occasions, always knows best.
Still, an accident is simply that. Do not take this as a reason for never making a bed again!!

Ha, yes, well, both my wife and her mother are two tough old-fashioned broads who have little patience in sympathy for the men in their lives, the exception being of course, the two boys of Mrs. GF. The best remedy offered, get up; get out; get going. Given all that, I am definitely a slush puppy for all forms of well intentions and consolation, even if it comes through cyber-technology.
Making my bed, like organizing the dishwasher, I am hopelessly hardwired to do it, cannot stop myself, thus getting what I deserve.

How awful for you!! I’m so sorry. Back pain is so excruciating. I can almost feel your pain, and am very glad it has passed. I did that to myself last year by reaching into the refrigerator.
Dr…”how did this happen?” Me…”reaching for food”. Humiliating.
Six weeks of physical therapy, pain meds and books I will never remember reading.
I’m sorry to hear about and can appreciate your family’s lack of sympathy. My hubs doesn’t have a nurture bone in his body.

Bette Davis said it best, “Old age ain’t no place for sissies.” How true is that? Looking in the frig, making a bed, reaching for the newspaper, funny how hell has an unexpected way of showing up in one’s life. Regarding the Mrs. and the Moms in Law, I probably paint too dire a picture. It’s just that the two ladies understand that most men, myself included, have a much lower threshold of pain than most women, themselves included.
I am already ready to twist and shout, up and down, all around. Now if my back will only cooperate…

Oh dear Mr GF, I am sorry to hear about your back. I hope this is not the sort of thing you succumb to periodically. One can medicate the pain, but the lying in bed all day is torture for the active farmer! Especially when the tv is so far away from your bed…
Love the comforter. And I wouldnt turn you away if you showed up at my door with that armoir…..

It is still early, the coffee has yet to kick in, and so my witty armoire comment, though it still stands, appears under your writing not mine.
Now the back pain, yes, the back pain started over fifteen years ago playing in the surf with my oldest, and at the time only child. Since then, it is one of those every year or two aggravations that remind us about fading youth and all the “what might have been” moments in our lives. This particular ouch happened at my mother in law’s home on our road trip to take the youngest to his new home at boarding school. I run a whole lot and she has the blessing to live in beautiful countryside. The bummer for me was not missing out on the chores, but instead missing out on that hour or two of exercise, that hour or two that was mine, all mine, just mine…

ahhh…the road trip. All that sitting – very bad for the ol’ spine. I am told (and firmly believe) that ab strength is the key to conquering back pain and we must all keep our middle taught and engaged, as if at any moment someone could surprise us with a quick jab to the middle. I think these episodes of spasm can occur even during the most mundane activities when we are not paying attention to form, but who, I demand to know, pays such close attention to form when making a bed? Certainly not I. I am a drifter- I appreciate any opportunity for my mind to drift
Crossfit. That what I say. Can I tempt Totem Hall with WODs?

Like you my mind drifts, heck my life is one long drift, and like you, I have heard and believe that ab strength is the key to all peace, love, harmony, and understanding. That was the point of my whole exercise regimen, the running, the calisthenics, now in ruins, pain, and disorder. Form is for those whose mind dos not drift like ours.
Finally, I am not familiar with WOD’s. Is that something you are offering to teach me? Do we need to tell our spouses?

oh no!! i hope you recover and get better soon! I can’t bear that feeling but I think it is nature’s way of telling you to reassess things and do them differently. Are you doing other exercise to help you stay fit and limber? Also when you bend over to make the bed you have to follow the health and safety rules because pulling and tugging at bed corners can cause little twitches in muscle. I got calf muscle strain from flip flops. But lovely room btw

Interesting you should bring up the whole reassess thing. That is exactly what I thought about during the more uncomfortable times on my back. As I wrote, I do/did sit-ups and push-ups every day, gradually increasing to where I was doing 200 each per session. In addition, I do/did run every other day averaging around 12 kilometers a pop. After throwing in a horseback ride and a pool swim, I thought that I had finally solved the riddle to a chronic problem. Obviously, I was wrong and during my recuperation, I hit on the solution for yoga, specifically hot yoga since I like to sweat.
Funny, how the spasms/twitches happen in the most mundane situations, in the most mundane places. I personally think that God has a sense of humor and enjoys playing a nasty little trick on us every once in a while…

Sorry to hear the bad report, Gentleman Farmer. I say to you – Pilates, man, pilates. I recall reading about your situp passions. They are fine, but they are only – and repetitively – stretching the same muscles over and over again. I think we are similar ages and I have had similar troubles to what you’re having now. I’ve been there but I’m not there any more. A good chiropractor and a new found passion for pilates works for me. Yoga would work too, I dare say. Buck up man and get stretching. 🙂
