Not long ago, I looked up from whatever little task I had at hand and realized there were no flowers blooming here at Totem Hall, anywhere, anyhow.

christmas camellia...

christmas camellia…

That is so unusual, since we have an abundant blessing of blooms year round, which of course I absolutely love, since it gives me a reason to go outside, and make my picks of the day.  I blame November.  There was a brutish cold snap followed immediately by a deluge of biblical proportions and then another bit of nasty cold weather.

fried egg flower...

fried egg flower…

Those absurdly sweet harbingers of winter flowers, the Romneya, Tree Poppies, or Matilija Poppy, and the Camellia Sasanqua, the Christmas Camellia, the Yuletide Camellia, said “see ya, outta here, done”.

or yuletide camellia..

or yuletide camellia..

or matilija poppy...

or matilija poppy…

And so we were, that is until Christmas Day, when miracle of miracles the Camellia Japonicas, which had been promising, burst forth in all their single, semi-double, irregular semi-double, formal double, elegans, and informal double glory. Spectacular stuff, kid you not, simply one of the best Christmas presents ever.

Now as I type this out, Winter Storm Gorgon has come and is now slowly leaving the scene.  Before I go any further, can I ask when we started naming winter weather patterns, honestly, what is up with that?  Is this a Weather Channel conspiracy, a new way for marketers and t-shirt makers to sell “I survived Gorgon” kitsch?

Anyway, the damage to my precious winter blooms was extensive, all the flowers freezer burned, and, as for the buds, time will tell.  Thankfully, the camellia is a hearty plant and our winters mild, so I fully expect to enjoy bringing flowers into the home sometime later this winter.

Pour a Cup & Roll Up the Sleeves…

Dame Dreary Day...

Dame Dreary Day…

It is a dreary, rainy day here at Totem Hall, which means that really I have nothing better to do than to roll up my sleeves and tackles loads upon loads of paperwork.

There is the coffee...

There is the coffee…

I find it so strange how much paper gets pushed about in this electronic age of ours.  For some reason, I remember promises made by the powers to be that things would be different.  No matter, invoices must be sorted, taxes filed, forms filled, balances balanced.

Paper scattered...

Paper scattered…

Paper not scattered...

Paper not scattered…

Of course, when all this shuffling and filing and crumpling get to be too much, I can always tuck in for a nice winter’s nap.

Hmmm...

Hmmm…

duck boots, l. l. bean

Theoretically today is a big deal day, all 12 – 12 – 12, and what not.  Here at Totem Hall, the rains came and came.  It is that particularly cold late fall day that only the South can produce, damp and grey.  It also reminds me that I need to send in my L.L. Bean duck boots for repair.

dry view from the south georgia room…

My memorable project for the big 12 – 12 – 12 is to construct a weather station so that I can know exactly just how cold and damp, or, come summer, just how hot and dry, I really am.  Well, that and I need to write a dozen or so thank you notes before the day is out for a birthday not too past.

Winter flowers in all their glory, both faded and prime...

Given the outside gloom, I thought I might add a picture of a flower or two, all fall/winter blooms.  A gentle reminder that, yes, down south we do get colors during the shortest of months.

Recent Background Noise

Perhaps my ennui stems from David Bowie's death. I read somewhere that we should consider ourselves lucky to have lived at the same time he did. I do. Many years ago, there was a girl in my secondary school, Debbie P., who was very hip, very groovy, and very pretty. Now I attended Catholic schools and so, as you might imagine, we had to wear uniforms, except, of course, for after-school activity, and that's where I get to the point of the story. Our school was putting on its big play of the year, I had a small part, Debbie was working backstage. One evening during rehearsal she showed up wearing a Ziggy Stardust tee-shirt. I was young, naive, not hip, not groovy, and not knowing who the ambiguous Ziggy might be. During the weekend that followed that rehearsal, I went to a record store and discovered just what David Bowie was all about. It was a transforming experience. Now some forty years later, I farm, David is dead, and Debbie is into Christian rock bands. Did I say ennui...
